As a state certified electrical contractor, we are self-performing all aspects of electrical projects as both a Prime and Subcontractor for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) through our qualified electricians and heavy equipment operators. Additionally, Sawyer Services owns and maintains its own fleet of MDOT certified vehicles and equipment. This in-house capability, coupled with our experienced employees, allows Sawyer Services to provide not only electrical services, but selective roadway and intersection improvements. Sawyer Services’ self-performance includes Roadway Lighting, Roadway Signing and Structures, Traffic Signals, and Intersection Modernizations. 

Having worked in multiple Michigan counties for MDOT, Sawyer Services is familiar with county specific installation requirements for signs, foundations, and signals. With multiple jobs, including intersection modernization jobs, in Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, and Monroe counties, Sawyer Services has worked closely with the project engineer firms regarding county specific protocols, so that we can understand them and implement county specific protocols internally. Combined, these protocols allow us to not only meet, but exceed, requirements in individual counties.

Throughout the prior year, Sawyer Services has had multiple active signal modernization jobs as both a prime contractor and a subcontractor. A generalized scope for a signal modernization job includes new foundation installation for traffic signal poles and controller cabinets, the installation of new poles and signal equipment, and the teardown of the original poles and infrastructure. The installation and demolition of the projects requires close coordination between Sawyer Services, the project engineer firm, the county, and the prime contractor. Additionally, Sawyer Services is proficient in traffic shift work; this work is predominately completed for concrete or asphalt prime contractors, and Sawyer Services’ ability to be flexible to meet project requirements makes us an asset for any traffic shifts. Due to the complexity of a traffic shift to ensure all traffic is being properly routed at any given time, we have a trained crew who familiarizes themselves with the project plans and then the conditions of the road when they arrive.

 Scheduling impacts due to rapidly changing weather conditions is a fact of life for MDOT contractors. Not only does a good contractor need to keep rapidly changing weather in mind, but it also needs to remain aware of traffic constraints and the conditions of the roads. Due to MDOT’s traffic maintenance requirements, lane shutdowns and work that impedes the flow of traffic require careful coordination and foresight. These multifaceted factors require flexibility, and our MDOT crew allows Sawyer Services to complete these jobs on time and to their specifications.

Working only feet away from live traffic requires a level of awareness and attentiveness to detail that is not similarly present for jobs in other industries. The safety of Sawyer Services’ employees is our utmost concern, and traffic safety requirements are communicated regularly. If at any time any employees feel there could be improvements to our current traffic safety protocols, they are immediately taken into account. Our safety protocols are constantly being revised and made better, because there is nothing more important than our employees and those on the road getting home safely at night.

Sawyer Services can handle all your traffic related needs as we are pre-qualified through the Michigan Department of Transportation to provide municipal road and highway services. These services are also available for other public or private contracting.
